Luna’s lava adventures: Thrilling Stromboli exploration

Home » Blog » Luna’s lava adventures: Thrilling Stromboli exploration

Join us on an unforgettable adventure as we explore one of the world’s most active volcanoes, Stromboli. Known for its frequent eruptions every 20 minutes, Stromboli is a sight to behold. Although climbing to the summit has been restricted since 2019, visitors can still hike up to 400 meters with a guide. The observatory at 200 meters is an accessible goal, even for families with small children. Here’s how our day unfolded on this remarkable island.

Reaching the Observatory

We decided to split our group for the hike: the men would venture up to 400 meters with a guide, while the women and children would aim for the observatory at 200 meters. The children, full of energy and curiosity, delighted in every step, exploring bugs, sticks, tracks, and mud along the way.

Upon reaching the observatory, we found ourselves eager for more adventure. The volcano’s allure was irresistible, and we wanted to get closer. So, with excitement and a hint of rebellion, we decided to push on.

Higher and Higher

Meanwhile, the men were already enjoying spectacular views from 400 meters. Our group, not wanting to miss out, continued climbing. As we ascended, the children’s enthusiasm grew with each step. We eventually reached 300 meters, the highest point allowed without a guide. From this vantage point, we had a breathtaking view of the volcano’s eruptions. In the distance, we could see the lights of guided groups making their way back down.

The Next Day’s Spectacle

The following day, we observed Stromboli’s eruptions from our boat, Luna. Reflecting on our previous day’s hike, we realized how far we had come—both literally and metaphorically. The children, though less excited about the volcano now, reveled in the novelty of staying up late.

Capturing the perfect shot of an erupting volcano is no easy feat. It requires patience and timing, but the reward is well worth the effort. The awe-inspiring sight of nature’s power in action left us with memories that will last a lifetime.

Our next journey was a long one—115 nautical miles to Salerno, over 200 kilometers away. For such crossings, we rely on our “watch captains,” three trusted individuals who monitor our progress and keep in touch with search and rescue teams if necessary. Their vigilance allows us to sail with greater peace of mind, knowing that someone is always looking out for us.

We sailed to Salerno, along the Amalfi coast. It was a nice ride, calm sea and good winds. Until the last part, where the wind kept growing and growing.

As we prepared to depart, the weather took a turn for the worse. Strong winds made it impossible to anchor safely, and everyone on board began to feel seasick. Desperately seeking refuge, we discovered that all nearby harbors were full, except for one—the most expensive one. With no other choice, we braved the high winds and docked for the night at a steep cost of 350 euros.

This unexpected expense was a harsh reminder of the unpredictable nature of our journey. Despite the cost and the challenge of navigating in strong winds, we managed to dock safely and finally got some much-needed rest.

Our adventure on Stromboli was a mix of excitement, challenge, and awe. From hiking up the volcano with our children to navigating treacherous winds and expensive harbors, every moment was a testament to our resilience and thirst for exploration. We hope you enjoyed this glimpse into our journey and look forward to sharing more adventures with you in future vlogs. Stay tuned!
