As we film this episode, we are safely in Grenada and hurricane season has officially begun in the Caribbean. That means weather is once again becoming one of the most important topics on board. In this episode, we look back at one of the biggest differences we’ve experienced between sailing in the Mediterranean and sailing in the Caribbean: the weather.
Back in the Mediterranean, weather forecasting was a daily obsession. From local systems like the Mistral and the Nevera to powerful DANA storms along the Spanish coast, we learned that conditions can change incredibly fast. Safety at sea often depended on staying one step ahead of the forecast. You’ll see how we raced ahead of Storm Alice, a powerful DANA weather system that brought flooding and severe weather to parts of Spain. Looking back, leaving Sant Carles Marina when we did turned out to be one of the best decisions we made. Just hours later, severe storms hit the Ebro Delta, roads flooded, train services were disrupted, and parts of La Ràpita ended up underwater.
But this episode isn’t only about weather. We also take you along on our unforgettable sailing adventure through Spain, including our arrival in one of Europe’s most iconic cities: Barcelona. For the first time ever, we sailed into Barcelona by boat and finally visited the breathtaking Sagrada Família. More than 140 years after construction began, Gaudí’s masterpiece is now entering its final stages, and seeing it with our own eyes was nothing short of incredible. Along the way, we discover the charm of Spanish coastal life, explore the historic Orígens Festival in Sant Carles de la Ràpita, and reflect on why Spain has completely stolen our hearts. From beautiful beaches and rich history to incredible architecture and sailing destinations, it’s easy to understand why so many sailors fall in love with this part of the Mediterranean. Meanwhile, life in the Caribbean feels very different. The steady trade winds have made us more relaxed, but with hurricane season approaching, we’re once again keeping a close eye on tropical waves rolling off the coast of Africa as we prepare to head toward the ABC Islands.
